4 Simple Success Strategies You May Not Have Enough Guts For...
by Maritza Parra | May 29, 2011
A boy playing in the fields got stung by a nettle. He ran home to his mother, telling her that he had touched that nasty weed and it had stung him. "It was just your touching it, my boy," said his mother, "that caused it to sting you. The next time you meddle with a nettle, grasp it tightly and it will do you no hurt." Do boldly what you do at all.
- A fable by Aesop
Here's a few questions for you - Do you really want success? Are you tiptoeing around what you want? Are you afraid to really go for it? Are you willing to do Whatever It Takes, regardless of the sacrifice?
It takes 4 important traits and I'm going to reveal to you all four of them. It's your job to decide whether or not you have them, or if you are willing to take the time to cultivate them.
1) Unbridled Desire - You have to really want your dream to be reality... but do you even clearly know what your dream looks like? Your business is a reflection of your life. If you desire success in both your life and career then you must get clear on what that reality looks, feels, and tastes like.
What do you dream about becoming? What do you dream about experiencing in your life? What is it that you want more than anything? Most people can come up with a list of things they'd like to have -- more money, a better house, new friends, more supportive colleagues, more time off, etc. All of us at one point or another also list other overarching goals that we'd like to achieve. Maybe get published, open a brand new business, run a marathon, make $1M, things like that.
I refer to the desires that are not crystal clear and specific as your "Wish List".
"Oh, it might be nice if that happened..."
If that's the kind of desire you have, just pack it up right now and forget your big dreams...
This is a big problem I see with some entrepreneurs. They aren't willing to do that upfront work of getting serious clarity. If you don't do that, you'll never be able to create your clear road map that will take you exactly where you want to go financially or personally.
A "Wish List" is not unbridled, do-whatever-it-takes. It's just a wish list and whether you carry this list in your pocket or your brief case or stuff it in the back of your sock drawer; usually you don't take action on it. It only resurfaces later, like maybe 5 years later...
"Oh yeah, that's what I said I wanted..."
And you wonder why you didn't stick with it or stay on top of that list. If you turn that wish list into something that is crystal clear and super specific, and you take it even further by adding some actual emotion to it, then it becomes a true desire. It becomes an unbridled desire you keep at the forefront of your mind and action.
2) Strategic Reverse Engineering - Once you've gained clarity and emotion with what your clear and unbridled desire is, THE best way I've found (from intense study of the mega-successful and personal experience) is to create your own road map or blueprint.
Begin with the end of the journey. You stated what you desire, you wrote down clearly what it was... now figure out how to get there from where you are today. Read about, study, and learn from those who have created what you want or something similar. My favorite way to begin reverse engineering is to begin with income.
Start with the exact amount of income you want to create for the year. Then break it down into each month, each week, each day, and even to each hour. This gives you a clear number you know you must reach.
This does several things.
First, it helps you know how much your time is worth. It will be much harder, with a clear desire and this reverse engineered number, to sit back, grab a cold one, and watch TV for a couple of hours a day. In fact, after doing this exercise put up signs with that exact number all over your home or office. You'll find yourself becoming more focused on creating that instead of wasting time.
Second, it helps you work harder each day to make sure you are meeting those goals. You'll know exactly how many products or services you'll have to sell each hour, day, week, etc. You'll know whether or not you're on target and if you're not, you can do something to course correct, gain momentum, and make it happen.
3) Resiliency - Have you noticed that even when disaster strikes, the truly successful are able to re-group, re- balance, re-focus, and later usually end up at even greater heights of achievement? There's a reason for that. They may suffer and gnash their teeth for a little while, but then they get up, dust off their knees and keep moving forward, no matter what.
4) Monitor Your Self-Talk Un-apologetically - Part of success and cultivating resiliency includes monitoring your Self-Talk. Then the next step is being unapologetic when censoring those around you in the negativity they want to "vomit" on you.
Think about the economy for the last few years and how differently people have reacted to it. A lot of people have been devastated by the economy. Then there are others who found a way or multiple ways to thrive even when the economy took a nosedive. A major factor helping them create their positive experience during the economic downturn has to do with positive (or negative) self-talk and self- thought.
The clear question here is do you control your life or do you react to it?
Consistent negative self-talk fuels low self-worth, inconsistency, lack of action, fear-based decision making, and self-sabotage. Negative or positive self-talk is not much more than a habit, one that can be even more internalized and reinforced by things such as the mainstream media.
A low-tech trick when I need to stay positive, find solutions, and when I find myself going into too much negative self-talk is the rubber band trick. Put a regular rubber band on your wrist and monitor your self-thought for the next 24 hours. Whenever you have a negative or self- sabotaging thought, stretch the rubber band and let it go. It may sting a little and even leave a mark on your wrist, but it will help you become very aware of your thoughts so you can steer them in a more effective direction.
I'm not saying that everything on your road to success will be perfect or painless. Just like the boy in Aesop's fable, the success you want does mean sacrifice of some kind. But if you really want it, you will boldly go for it which can reduce the initial "sting" and bring you the success you truly desire.
Or you can decide not to go for it at all.
